I.D. challenge... female panther

reptayls Nov 04, 2003 01:23 PM

Hi all you panther lovers. Just out of curiosity, has anyone got a female with colors like this one??

Hubby thought she was a male when she was growing up, as her sisters are all the beige/peachy/brown tones. I always knew she was female - but this is by far the most colorful female we have ever seen. The picture is a bit dark, one of her lights was out when I snapped the photo. Hopefully, I will get better pictures of her soon.

Ivan, if you're out there, what do you think?
She looks nothing like her w/c mother... of course!

Morgana:

You mentioned that KK can tell female locales so they might be the people to check with as I can't calim anything like that. However I had 2 females that had similar coloration to yuors. Both were WC and one was Ambanja while the other was Ambilobe. Coloration alone is not reliable to identify females but that coloration your female shows was present females of those 2 locales.

Is she any of those?

Ivan,

Jim A. claims to be able to identify females too (a post on a yahoo board). However... I am not about to send photos all over the place.

Her mom was w/c - but she dropped a few eggs shortly after she got here and then died. The 4 surviving eggs were all females - this is one of those. Her mother was supposed to be ambanja - and that is what I am considering these females. I have a pic of the mother - typical gravid female panther coloration.

Thanks for letting me know there are other colorful females out there - I won't consider this one odd anymore.

Morgana:

By all means DO consider your female rare and special as there are not many females that show that coloration. Just because I came across 2 doesn't mean they are the run of the mill. Imagine what it is to run across 2 animals like that when you get the chance to look at hundreds. It is a very small percentage and the fact that you have one makes her very special so DON'T even think that your female is just another one.

I do hope she is Ambanja and, if she is, the babies should be very nice.

I don't know who Jim A. is, unless you are referring to Jim Nozaki. I have talked to him numerous times and he agrees that it is very difficult to tell females apart but there is always an educated guess. I just took one based on previous experience but I couldn't tell you for sure.

The locality of female I would put money on is an Ankaramy or a very pretty Nosy Girl.

Hi Ivan!

Paul,

I have some blue/grey nosy girls - but their verticals have the circle (or "u" - not the "v"... and this girl is definately green and teal with some blue speckles here and there - not to mention the orange that popped up recently.

We have never seen an Ankaramy female, so have no idea what their vertical patterns look like. I have been taking picts of all females we come in contact with - doing a comparison on their vertical patterns. Not very scientific - but just something I thought to try.

If you have pics of an Ankaramy female, could you share them with me? Thanks.....

Ivan,

I am currently trying to breed her with Leviathon - so I sure hope she IS ambanja. Think those babies would be "lookers"..??? I think so. It's just kinda different - to be sure she is "receptive" colors. She got the bright dk orange after they were together - so maybe that is her "gravid" color..??

Nope... not Jim N.
Jim A is an old AdCham'er.

Talk soon,

I had the same problem with Orion. She's not QUITE that bright, but she's just reaching a year this month. She gets a green/blue along her spine, and more of a green tint to her "undercolours" (for lack of a better word) than the browny colour. I remeber you helping me figure out if she was a girl lol. She even gets blue cheecks sometimes. When she sleeps she's bright peach with bright pastel green stripes. Strange...
your girl is LOVELY! Have/do you bred/breed her? If so, what do her kids look like? I can't remember if you said her morph... what was it?

We have bred her to a blue bar ambanja (we purchased Leviathon from Mythical Chameleons). We are hoping this will be a good match. The worst scenario is great looking "classic ambanjas" with some deep blue verticals.
