I would once again have to recommend a Nikon! For that price range, you could pick up the Nikon Coolpix 5000. If you are willing to spend a little bit more (about $550 to $600), you could pick up the Nikon Coolpix 5700. I have personally never used the Nikon CP 5000 but I hear it is very similar to the CP5700. I have used the CP5700 and absolutely love it. I think it is a fantastic camera and does a terrific job capturing coloration in reptiles. The reason I recommend Nikons is because of the awesome job they do with reptile photography. They are definitely worth the money if you are looking for a camera that will accurately capture coloration in reptiles.

The CP5700 is simple to use yet offers a large variety of different options. You can use the camera on auto or if you really get into it and start learning about the different options and what features are available to you, you can really have a lot of fun with the CP5700. It also has a fantastic macro feature. There's a $100 rebate from Nikon right now for the CP5700 but in order to qualify for the rebate, you need to buy the camera from an authorized Nikon dealer. There are some stores online that sell the camera that aren't authorized dealers so they generally have lower prices but just becareful.

I would recommend that you check on BizRate.com. Their ratings are generally pretty good and they list all the prices and stuff. I'll post the link at the bottom.

Here are a couple of pictures I have taken with the 5700...

Keep in mind that all of these photos have been resized and compressed to make them user friendly. These pictures are also straight out of the camera with no editing in photoshop or anything. I hope this info helps. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions about these cameras and I'll try my best to help!

it won't let me link to the search so just go to www.bizrate.com and type in Nikon Coolpix 5700 into the search engine and it'll pull up the results for you.
