How do you clean branchs? more...

poisonfrog420 Nov 04, 2003 04:06 PM

I have 4 large (4'-5') branchs that I got out of my back yard. They have all been setting out there for at least 6 mo. if not longer. I want to put them in my new dragons cages I just built, but want to sanitize them first. What is the best and safest way to do that? I thought of just misting them down with bleach and then scrubbing them down, has any one done that before? Thanks a lot, Jake.

I was wondering the same thing. Think there's something about bleach and baking in the oven...any tips?

let it soak in a 10% bleach solution for 30 minutes to kill any parasites and bacteria. Rinse well and let dry.

You can also bake it in the oven (250 degrees) after you rinse the bleach off.

I prefer to do both and be safe that way.

I know that works for smaller logs, but these are HUGE! One is over 6' long and has a 5" diamiter.

It will not fit in any oven I have access to and I do not have a container large enough to soak it in.

Any ideas for large peices?

Use a hose & spray it with a jet or stream setting on the nozzle. After you get all the big stuff off, put some ammonia in a spray bottle and soak the branch. Let it soak a while then rinse it very well. Then let it completely dry.

Make sure the dragons are nowhere around when you spray the ammonia. You'll know why once you start spraying. lol

Good luck.

I take branches and logs for the critters to the car wash and hose them down real good with the high pressure sprayer. You could take a jug of bleach or ammonia with you and spray some on and let it set a while. This would take care of the surface stuff. There might be some bugs buried in the wood that could come out later. That is what the baking in the oven is supposed to fix. I haven't got that part figured out yet.
