Need ideas for semi-aquatic tank inhabitant... Any ideas?

Chrysemys Nov 04, 2003 05:02 PM

Hey,
I have a bunch of left-over stuff from my turtles old tank. Heres the stuff I have...

1. 40gal long tank, 48in L, 13in W, and 18in H

2. 5gal tank with on side cut out, that was used as a basking area for the turtles. It can sit on top of the tank, and has a ramp leading into the water.

3. HOT Magnum 250 canister filter

4. FilStar XP2 canister filter

5. Ebo Jager submersible heater

6. Double light flourecent fixture

7. Basking light fixture

8. A bunch of gravel, plants, driftwood, ect.

What do you think I could put in this tank? I would like it to be semi-aquatic. I do not want any type of amphibean, which eliminates a lot of the optionis. I would like some kind of reptile that would be able to live its life out in this size of enclosure. (Oh and no more turtles... I have enough)
Thanks,
Chris

if you want a reptile you could go with basalisks (I always spell that wrong Im not sure if I spelt it correctly so dont hound me on it). Also water dragons like semi aquatic habitats however could grow over 2 feet. Snakes such as garter or ribbon snakes may do well, but will spend most of their time out of the water. They will hunt in the water however.

I don't think a basilisk or water dragon could live its life out in this set-up (images of noses rubbed raw come to mind), but there are a number of small semi-aquatic herps that would be comfortable in it.

rainbow snake
Garter/ribbon snakes Thamnophis
Water snakes Nerodia
Timor Monitor (maybe, they only reach 2' or so)

You should choose your pet based on what you want and are willing and able to provide for over the years instead of choosing based on what supplies you have. I would throw out all of that stuff and buy all new stuff for the animal that I planned and saved for. Take some time, read some books, do some research and see what's out there and what you are willing to commit to. If it comes down to it, sell the junk to provide for your other herps. Don't just try to fill the vacancy; you don't NEED another animal. Let the dust settle. Hey, you might decide to get some fish.
