Does anyone use newspaper for rats?

Thomas S. Nov 04, 2003 06:45 PM

I was thinking of using shredded newspaper for my upcoming feeder rat project. Is the ink harmful to the rats or the snakes I will be feeding them to? My local newspaper uses the newer non-smudge ink(paper?), most newspapers probably do these days. I'm just wondering if there is a problem with the rats chewing of the paper. I'll be getting the rats this Friday probably and I just want everything set up right beforehand so please excuse all the questions.

BTW, thanks to those who answered my question below.

JMHO, FWIW, YMMV.

I've used it for years and never had a problem whatsoever. I do avoid colored ink. I was told years ago that there could be toxins in it so I juse use the regular black and white sections of the paper. I believe that most newspapers are printed with soy ink but I don't know about the colored ink.
