are carpet pythons nippy

janome Nov 04, 2003 07:03 PM

I am really interested in a carpet python. I think they are real pretty with the black and yellow. Can anyone tell me if they are good for a beginner. I have corns and a milk already. I've read carpet pythons can be nippy. Is this true? Also how long do they get? I don't want any (snake) over 6 foot. Also how big of a tank do they need..

If you have a problem with getting bit dont get carpets. Most babys bite big deal. Also even the smaller carpets like IJs can get six feet or more so i wouldnt suggest a carpet for you, as they need bigger homes

I started out with kings before I got my first carpet too. Carpets are bit more work than say a cornsnake, but are well worth it.

Most hatchling carpet will bite. Averagely they can be tamed fairly quickly with confident/consistant handling. There are hatchling out there that aren't biters right off. But if you want looks and attitude my best advice is to meet the snake, keep you eyes open at Herp Conventions, and or buy from a reputible breeder. You may have to be patient and you may need to fork out at bit more but you get what you pay for...

As far as lenth I didn't want huge snakes either. Being a woman I wanted to be able to care for my snakes by myself and not have to rely too much on help from others when handling my adult snakes. The great thing about the lenth of a carpet is that even though they do get 6ft plus, they are thinner bodied than common burms or boas. Making them quite handlable and quite a bit less intimidating. In fact you'd never guess just by looking at my pair of coastals that they are both over 7ft. They just don't look like a big snake, a long snake but not a big snake. Does that make sense?...

Hope this helps,
Darci
