A new Savannah Monitor? Bad idea?

cti746 Nov 04, 2003 07:17 PM

I love reptiles and have 2 adult breeding frilled dragons, a sub-adult water dragon, 2 adult male beardies, a adult ball python, a Russian tortoise, and a 2 foot Savannah monitor. Damion, my monitor, is my favorite out of all of them. I bought him from a pet store about 6 months ago. He was extremely aggressive and untamed. I tamed him in about a month. He was under fed, kept cold, dry, and his skin shedding was not normal (he had layers of sheds built up that wouldn't come off). He is perfect now. He is like a little puppy.
At the petstore when I got him, there was another monitor identical to him. He is still aggressive and not very well cared for. He is on sale for 64.95. I am seriously considering buy him. But I have been pretty busy with school, I am only 14 but I know fully what im am doing with every single reptile I own or keep here. Is it a bad idea to purchase a second monitor? Or am I just obsessing?

i would go with an australian monitor (because their all c.b.) stay away from asain monitors cause they are for the most part all w.c.(so are savannah monitors) but look in to ackie monitors they are more expesive but (in my opinion) have better personalities and are "WAY" cheaper to keep than two savannah monitors.

Including vet bills, caging, food, etc, etc then if you really like that monitor then your mind is made up. I dont suggest monitors to anyone under 18 at least because at that age you relly have no idea what you will be doing in a few years but if you can care for them then welcome to the hobby. Id personally do some price shopping especially if that animal is skinny and not in very good shape because bosc monitors go for anywhere from $5-$20 online and from some very reputable dealers. They are all imports so they sell cheaply.

I would tell you not to buy the monitor. It's hard to walk into a pet store and see animals that aren't being cared for properly, but none of us can help solve the pet-trade problems if we keep giving pet stores our money. Is this store a private store or is it Petco? Savannah Monitors are animals that all Petco locations are supposed to keep in their stores, so if this is a Petco, then chances are they will just order another one to take it's place if you buy it. If you think this critter is just too cool and you want it because you like it, then go ahead and get it.

First, It is a privately owned pet store. They have only had those two larger Savannahs that ive seen. They can't sell them because to workers won't even pick them up because their scared of them. Though it only took a month or so to tame Damian. I want him really bad. I am wondering... If I order a lot of frozen rats online, could I support both monitors? And once they are full size, what is the most cost effective route to feeding them as far as what kind of animal.
I am going to analyze all the reasons why to buy him and why not to and see if its really the right choice or if its just another thing I want.
