Find an area with long grass/brush/trees, preferably close to a pond or creek. Start turning over boards, tin, and anything else on the ground. Loose bark on a dead tree may also shelter a snake. Please replace anything you turn over so it's back in original orientation. That way it may shelter a snake when you come back another time.
For more information on finding snakes, consult the Peterson Field Guide for reptiles and amphibians of the eastern United States and Canada. A field guide makes a good gift for birthday, Christmas or other special occasion.
