Where can I get frozen rats ?

Joannesmom Nov 04, 2003 10:00 PM

My dtr's 12 ft Burmese accepts only rats, despite heroic attempts to get him switched to rabbits and/or chickens. He's been offered fresh-killed and frankly its demoralizing to keep sacrificing these poor creatures to a fussy snake. For a couple years we raised our own rats but killing these personable guys was very difficult. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the snake eating rats, just with me killing them. We had a local supplier of frozen rats till about 4 months ago, but he's quit and I have exhausted all the leads I can think of in the Fraser Valley of BC. Does anyone know of a currently active breeder of rats in the area, or where we could get a reliable source of shipped frozen rats ? We're getting really frustrated and I'm worried about the snake's well-being if he goes too long without food.

I used to buy frozen mice from G and G rodent farm. They were good and reasonable. They sell rats also. Ziploc bags, nothing fancy, but good feeders. What about chickens? Just a thought..

Thanks so much to the folks who have responded, I appreciate your help. The rodentpro people won't ship to Canada (but theres no problem getting frozen rats across the border says the Dept of Agriculture)so could be courier difficulties. We've tried chicken- the snake will try anything once. That chicken had been decapitated and was still warm, but the snake, once he struck, had trouble finding a place to start his swallow. Perhaps a lillte confused when there was no 'pointy end' to start with ?? He's taken one rabbit also, but we've wasted a lot of critters that he then refuses. Never says 'no' to a nice rat, though.
