Im looking to get a timor moniter...I was wondering how big of a cage?I have a 6 foot long 3 foot high 2 foot across cage...would that be big enough?
what do they eat?
Are they agressive?
How big do they get?
Are they flighty?

That's a BIG cage, you probably could keep 2 or three in there. They're supposed to be arboreal but mine seems to enjoy horizontal space more. They eat rodents and insects. They only get 2 feet long and over half of their body length is tail. WC ones especially are very flighty and will bite if restrained, CB ones are occasionally more tractable.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
Flighty, they hide almost all of the time, they can bite hard, and dont make a pet monitor that you will see much or handle much at all. Timors are beautiful little animals but you have to accept them for what they are.
are they really that bad with biting? i mean granted i havent had mine that long, but he has not even tried to bite me (he just claws and scratches and whips his tail when i grab him)... also mine spends a lot of time in his water so i would try to provide a good swiming space in a cage that big. mine would try to swim and dive in his small water bowl in his temporary cage (the bowl was about half his total length)

Mine only bites when really pressed, he tries everything else fist. But it REALLY hurts. He bit me once and the vet once. Generally if you keep your fingers out of the general vicinity of the mouth you're ok.

When a semi arboreal or xeric (spelled wrong) monitor is soaking alot the cage is set up wrong. What I mean is that timors love to go underground and sometimes they like to climb. If the animal is soaking alot its trying prevent moisture loss or escape from the heat. My old timor still jumps in the water for a few minutes every other day or so but spends most time underground. 1) do you have a temperature gradient from about room temperature to around 86 ambient degrees? 2)Do you have a basking spot that has an area the size of your monitors body (STV) that a surface temp that exceeds 130 degrees? Both of these are important as the faster they bask the faster they do other things throughout their day. My monitors have 130-188 degree basking spots as they are smart enough to know what they need for temps. Yours wants to be cooler in the air or needs to conserve moisture, do you have a screen lid maybe?
i think for the most part the setup is right... im just still working on raising the basking temp. he doesnt soak... i hardly see him just sitting there, its more like he enjoyhs a good swim every once in a while. i dont have a screen lid, i built the cage to retain moisture so i have a small screen portion on the top of the back of the cage and some holes on the back of the cage also... you can see my setup and monitor a couple posts down entitled "timor monitor update" if you can look at it i would appreciate cuz i also had some other questions that no one answered. i am planning on adding more soil and branches soon.
thanx

your cage pic didn't show up in your earlier post, so I can't really see what the setup was like, but another reason monitors sometimes spend a lot of time in water is a lack of suitable hide spots.
It's possible it may just like to swim a lot, but try offering more choices of hide spots (flat pieces of wood on the substrate, snug little hollow branches) and see if it starts hiding in there instead of the water.
sorry the pics didnt come out, i really wanted some critique. i really havent seen him much lately, i think your were right cuz i sawe him in the water a lot when he was in his temprary cage (not very many hide spots) and the first day or two after i movwed him to his cage i still saw him spending considerable time in the water... lately however he has not been spending that much time in the water... in fact i have not seen him very much at all lately. i think now that he is in his new cage he has found his hide spots and is gewtting acustumed to everything. he has a couple hide spots that i have seen him in. i just really wanna find out how to disenfect that big branch... or since he is a long term captive do you think he could handle it if i just put it in there? i also want to know about placing a vine in the cage to cover up the walls and give him more climbing/hiding spots. do you have that by chance?
thanx

no need to disinfect the log, unless you found it in a toxic dump or someplace that you suspect may be harbouring nasty infectious diseases
Most logs and branches found out in the bush are fine as they are.
As far as the vine up the back, anything that gives more climbing surface area can't be bad, as long as it isn't so convoluted the animal will get stuck in it while trying to climb
thanx for the help. i was asking about the plant mostly just because i was not sure if it posed some sort of threat to him. the log was found in a canyon with no pesticides or anything so im gonna try and put it in asap. thanx a lot for your help DK, i appreciate it.

I have a male green iguana,I had anoles that would free roam on my dresser....So i think i could tame a timor...I really wanna know what i should feed the baby.Well he is 15 inchs.
Thanx Iggygurl
Just keep in mind that they are extremely fast and they can squeeze under doors. You do not want to loose this lizard, trust me! And like I said, CB or WC makes a big difference in temperment.
Feed him bugs or small mice.
