HELP! whats going on

bigdee Nov 04, 2003 10:16 PM

To start I look in my ackie's cage and notice some baby crickets, i haven't fed him crickets in a good while far longer than it would take crickets to hatch. But the real problem is I lifted the piece of plywood to look for the ackie he dug himself in a burrow under the wood. Anyway I noticed like hundreds of these tiny white bugs and they where not baby crickets, they looked round and white. I looked elsewhere in the cage and seen more. What is this? I did what most say and use soil/sand for substrate. I use playsand and potting soil from the store.

They could be external mites, they could be pinheads(baby crickets) pinheads can survive living of what your monitor dumps. Either way the situation is correctable by taking the appropriate measures, accordingly.

there are many small insects and other arthropods that live in damp/moist substrate, especially under pieces of wood and other bits of cage furniture. In most cases, they are harmless detritus feeders

With my big albig. The little bugs were annoying for a while but they died in no time at all. The top soil I bought had little flying bugs in it that took a few weeks to get rid of. I used top soil from outdoors in the woods and a creek bank with only a few ants that were easy to get rid of. Potting soil is always full of little white bugs if you look at a recently repotted plant. They die in no time at all and seem completely harmless.

Springtails arelittle white bugs that you feed to dendrobates(poison dart frogs). Springtails are natures break down invertabrates found in siol all over the world. they likeit moist & actually never really disappear they just burrow in the soil &/or decrease in # unless your cage is completely dry for a loonnnggg time. They come to the surface to feed usually at night or under dark cover, ie. rocks hide spots, on any left over organic matter. Or it could be fly larvae in which case you would have noticed the flies. I cultivate them ,springtails, for my mantellas.
