Help!

casacrow Nov 04, 2003 10:39 PM

I have recently acquired a yearling ATB. I have kept them in the past and have had very few problems. This one seems to be suffering from some type of RI. It has a diffucult time breathing. Even when it tries to exhale it's throat gets puffed up really big as it tries to push the air out. I have never seen anything like this before. I have other ATB's and they have no problems at all and are kept under the exact same conditions. Does anyone have any advice as to what the best route would be to help this little guy out?

Hey,
First thing is to get him to the vet ASAP! What is your humidty and temps? Besure the humidty is around 70% and your temps on the hot end are about 85-90 with a slightly hotter basking site, and a cool end of about 80 degrees. Also try raising the humidty as high as possible till you get him to the vet. You may also want to get advice some some one alse, I dont have any experence with RI.
Good luck.

Sorry, I don't have an ATB but I do have some experience with respitory infections. I have been researching getting an ATB. I talked to a guy at a show who said usually the CB babies they get in are a little wheezy. He said it can be caused by too much humidity although too little will also irritate the breating passages and can also cause a problem. I will give you some contact information for this guy who may be able to help give you an idea what humidity he keeps his sick snakes at while rehabilitating them. E-mail me if you want to know who it was I talked to.

The morning after I posted he had died. I was really quite surprised. His humidity never dropped below 70% as the room he is in never drops below that. When he was misted twice a day it would go up to about 100%.His day temp went from 80-86 and his lows went from 78-84. I keep others and have been keeping them for a few years and never saw anything like this. His nostrils were so clogged that there was no wheezing. When he tried to exhale is throat would puff right up as he tried to push the air out of his lungs. I think that when I got him he was just too far gone. I do not know the previous owners, but did see that his enclosure was quite dry when I was there. I never noticed his breathing when I purchased him though. Well I will take it as a lesson learned and thouroughly check snakes before they are purchased.

Im very sorry to hear that... You should try to find the fellow that sold you the snake, and besure to hold onto the snake, you could take it to a vet and get a auotopsie down if you wanted to know the caulse of death. You may also want to be keeping a eye out on your other animals, and get them to a vet at first sign of illness. How ever I would really try to find the guy who sold it to you, try to get your money back.
Any how, we are all very sorry to here this, best of luck geting your money back.

The amazon was in quarantine so I am not too worried about my other snakes. I did keep the body and will have my vet take a look at it when I have time. I am not going to ask for my money back. I think it was just my fault for not doing a very thorough inspection at the time of purchase. Lesson learned.

Thanks for your replys.
