Housing for a Frilled Dragon

lazandlouie Nov 04, 2003 11:55 PM

About how big would anyone suggest, a cage or aquarium should be for a 3 month old frilled dragon, how big do they get in a year, and if i bought a waterfall type of thing to put in the cage do you think they'd enjoy it, get it in it, or ignore it? Thank You!!

if you get a cage for a full size adult frilled, you won't have to worry about spending more as your frillie gets older... also, i'm not sure about the waterfall, but that's a really good idea, i'll be checking back to see the responses you get from this so my brother can decide if he wants one or not

take care! sorry i couldn't be of much assistance to you

I started with a 55 gal. You could start smaller like a 20 gal... Then as he/she outgrows it, you can step the cage size up before moving them into their permanent cage.. 3'Wx2'Dx4'H minimum for a single adult. Males can reach full size within a year... females tend to have a slower growth rate.

The reason I'd start off with a smaller cage first so the frilled can chase down food easier. They LOVE waterfalls and large water dishes to lay in.

I've heard that waterfalls are no good because the grow bacteria in them easily which is bad for the lizard.

Waterfalls are great for frilled as long as they are kept clean. Some frilled have a hard time finding still water and a fountian helps a lot. It is true that they harbor a lot of bacteria, but if you bleach them out every few weeks at least you should be ok. I also pump a bleach solution through my pump once a month. After I pump a lot of fresh water through there I also pump some Amquel to make sure there is no more bleach in the pump.

I had to remove the waterfall from my big enclosure because I had one frill that would lay across it so the water would run over him like a shower. the problem was his tail would hang over the end and so after an hour or so the waterfall would be empty and the substrate would be a swamp.
