Can anyone work out correct does of Panacur to give please

freckles680 Nov 05, 2003 08:35 AM

My vet has given me panacur paste with the instructions to give "2 syringe graduations per kg bodyweight". I was never very good at math and I am totally lost as to how much I should give my 48g leo.

Okay, here it goes: (straight from a canadian who deals with the metric system daily...)

'kilo' means 1000, so 1 Kilogram (kg) is 1000 grams. Since your leo weighs 48 grams, divide 48 by 1000 (=0.048) and multiply that by the dosage recommendation. (2*0.048=0.096)

So what we get is 0.096 gradients, or 0.1 gradients, which I suspect will be REALLY hard for you to measure unless a gradient on the syringe is huge.

I think I read something on here last week about pancur not being harmful if overdosed, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about getting the 0.1 mark right on. You'll probably lose twice that much in the nozzle of the syringe anyway

Good luck

You are absolutely correct in that it is very hard to overdose panacur...

The Panacur paste is more difficult to use than the liquid, so if you have any trouble with it I would call your vet and ask if he can provide you with the liquid.

You can use the liquid in one of two ways...

1) I use an allergy syringe and pull the needle out of the syringe with pliers. I get the 1cc size syringes, which allows me to get very precise dosages, and after the needle is removed they work great for administering Panacur PO (orally). Most of my geckos will readily lick the panacur liquid right up.

2) Another method you can use with the liquid if you have trouble getting your gecko to take it PO would be injecting the panacur into the cricket's abdomen and then feeding it to the gecko. Obviously this only works if your gecko is still feeding.

All that being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the paste... as long as you are able to administer it adequately.

Good luck with your gecko.

The vet only had paste I'm afraid. I put some paste on a wax worm which is the only food item Teg will eat without fail. That's why I had him checked out because of his disinterest in food. He was really excited to see a wax worm and immediately went to eat it - and then spat it out! I tried this twice before he got the message that his favourite food is tainted and walked away. Hopefully he got enough Panacur anyway.

Thanks for your advice. I couldn't imagine me injecting anything though!
