big hole in woodlog - turtles can get stuck....ahhh

humanvege Nov 05, 2003 10:55 AM

I just bought a nice big furnished woodlog from petsmart. It's a really nice piece for the tank - there are natural curves that forms a ramp up the top - which creates a nice basking spot. My turtles loved it - they were immediately climbing all over it and resting on it. One big problem - there's a big hole on the side of the woodlog (I guess it allows water to get inside the trunk so that it stays submerged in water instead of floating?) The hole is about 1 1/2 inch in diameter, which means that my baby RES can try to swim inside the hole, get stuck, and might not be able to swim back out... Ahhh. I tried all different methods to seal the hole, but nothing works well under water. I tried using pebbles, rocks, tape....nothing works well and the stuff that I stuck into the woodlog will keep falling out from the hole. Right now I have stuck a hand towel in it (the hole has a corner of the towel sticking out) and it seems that the towel is well fitted into the space and my baby RES won't be able to swim in to the log. The only problem is - the wet towel can house a lot of bacteria and it could get very nasty. Any suggestions what I should do?

maybe get a smaller log to put underneath that log. you know? so there would be two logs....and then in the smaller one...the res DEFINITELY cant get into that.

maybe try filling it with something like spackle or some other kind of material that will be able to permanently seal the hole shut and not come apart...

i was thinking of something along those lines....but I am not sure what to use. I don't want to use any thing that might be toxic or harmful for my little babies. Any idea what material is safe?

hmmm....i used a piece of corkbark for my turtle's basking area...the stuff is pretty brittle. maybe you could buy a small piece and use it to plug up the hole. you can easily trim the stuff, and you could probably even use a few small pieces to jam up the hole....

Why don't you just buy a small piece of stainless wire mesh with very small holes and some small stainless nails (more like tacks really) and fasten that on there. If you get the right kind of mesh and nails it won't rust.
