High protien foods are not good for these tortoises. High fiber foods are. What is considered high protien? I was in a pet food store today and found some alfalfa treats for rabbits. They are finely ground up and compressed into large pellets. I soaked one in warm water and my leopard loved it. I'm wondering if this would be a good winter food instead of grocery store bought greens. Here is a list of the ingredients. alfalf meal, oat mill feed, wheat middlings, ground corn, and some calcium and vtamine supplements.
Analysis:
crude protine - 12%
crude fat - 3%
crude fiber - 20%
crude calcium - .60%-1.0%
What do you think?

There is a big debate on that question.
I believe if you stay away from animal protein in the case of grazers (leopards, sulcatas...)and feed a varied diet you don't need to pay any mind to protein content.
And of course I'll always suggest using Mazuri tortoise diet as an interm diet when necessary.

They also make small timothy hay cubes for rabbits, etc. They are lower in protein. I shred them and use them as garnish for the salads. I believe they are made by Kay-Tee.
