About these HUGE pits. (thred below)

DeanAlessandrini Nov 05, 2003 11:09 AM

I'd like to hear weights on some of the monsters...
How 'bout it:

Steve G: what about that monster N pine of yours?
How about that massive albino bull?

I'd like to compare to the weights on some of my big Drymarchon

i had a bullsnake that reached 8'6'' before he passed away at 18 dean. but he was not as big overall as any drys i have/had near that size. the big indigos and cribos seem to be able to carry around alot of that proportional weight more easily and gracefully after the 8' mark than most colubrids it seems to me. i mean, sometimes it's hard to believe that a snake THAT big could be that fast but they pull it off effortlessly everytime. my bigger pits are molasses by comparison most of the time but they will usually make up for their lack of speed w/ their lack of good manners......LOL!

Dean.........I just put my Northern on the scale for you.........9 lbs. 8 ozs. He's been on a month long hunger strike to boot. This guy is not nearly as stoutly built as an Eastern Indigo.........just lengthy. I'm sure you know that once male Indigo's start getting over 6 and 1/2 feet, they really begin to put on the girth. I had a 7' 6" male a long time ago, but I'm sure he weighed over 12 lbs. If you can, try to find an issue of the Nov. '99 Reptiles magazine. On page 16, there is a pic of a very large Northern Pine that is being held by four women. The pic received an honorable mention in a "big beasts" photo contest. The owner is listed as Phil Dickens. Maybe someone knows this guy, and can get an update on that brute. That animal looks to be close to 9 feet and a tad thicker than mine.

That's still a damn big n. pine. that's hefty.
This is an 8' indigo from the GA study site.

A wild snake, and weighs just over 10 lbs.
Yes...6.5' does seem to be a magic size for indigos, doesn't it?
You don't really find skinny indigos that are that big!

There are lots of BIG ONES on that GA study site!

(sorry for posting this here, pit people)

Dean........that's a big ass "blue gopher" snake in that pic. If only Florida F&W would let me keep one like in the good old days. I'd promise to give it a 8' x 4' cage and bring it into my snake room to sniff the rat snakes once a week.........like catnip............HAHAHA!

I'm embarssased to say I forgot her first name but she is the wife of Dirk Stevenson, a GA DNR
bilologist working with indigos in S GA

She is also a wildlife bilogist.

Phil Dickins is a police officer in Kansas City, Mo. Nice guy and an active member of the KSHS. And, he's a big guy. Ever notice that a lot of guys who have giant Pituophis are often big guys themselves? Phil Dickins, Shannon Brown, Eric Richter, all look like football players!

Cheers, TV
