Captive Seasnakes, Has it been accomplished?

snakemastermyke Nov 05, 2003 11:50 AM

Just out of total curiosity, has a zoo mueseum or anyone ever kept a true sea snake such as a hydrophine in captivity. I have yet to ever see this in any Zoo or aquarium I have ever been to and I have been to quiet a few(Shedds Aquarium Chicago, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Long Beach Aquarium...). I am just curious, it seems like something that would need a massive aquarium. Hydrophine have such a huge range thoug I owuld thing they must not be extremely peticular. Anyone know if there has been succesful captive keeping of a seasnake?

Yes, several zoos and aquariums have kept sea snakes successfully. However, becuase they are dangerous and require very specialized care (hand feeding dead fish, etc.) there is little incentive on the part of zoos to do so. Check out Brian Grieg Fry's page (see link) for some video of captive sea snakes.

I've personally viewed Banded Seakraits kept in captivity in the Dallas, TX Zoo.

I also opportuned to speak with the keeper in charge of reptiles there, he was kind enough to show me the tuatauras which were off display when I went there. The Dallas Zoo has an excellent reptile house, with some incredible exhibits, including a parenti, sailfins, and of course the seakraits.
