Hatchling growth rates

xelda Nov 05, 2003 01:35 PM

Based on your experiences, do clutchmates grow significantly faster if they are housed individually than if they were kept together? What other developmental impacts are there?

I'm still working with my first hatchlings (now 8 days old). I initially kept them separated for the first day, but I decided to try putting them together.

I have had good luck keeping 2 hatchlings, usually clutch mates, in the same cage. Just make sure you give them plenty of food, and try not to disturb them much. Some times they’ll see me though their cage, get upset, and start nipping at each other, so I try to give hatchlings as much privacy as possible. I have yet to loose a hatchling or a tail, and you seem like a responsible keeper, so I don’t think you’ll have any problems at all. Of course, if one starts to visibly out-grow the other, then its best to separate them. Best of luck, and enjoy your hatchlings!

If they are kept apart when they are young they can grow at their own rate. There wont be any competition for food or one bullying the other.

However I had to keep a few of my cluthmates together this year when they were babies, just because I had had run out of room. It was only temporary. As long as you make sure that both are getting food-water, etc.... you'll be fine. Thats the most important. If one seems bigger than the other, than you should seperate them just because one is growing faster than the other. The smaller one will become intimidated by the bigger one.

If you keep them together, make sure you keep a close eye on everything to make sure both are doing well and then you probably wont have a problem. I didn't, but I kept a close eye on mine and made sure that everything was ok, and everything was.

I'm trying to keep a close eye on them without intruding on them. One's more active than the other, but it looks like they're both getting their share of food. They certainly have the poop to show for it. lol

No, they're just aberrants because the rings on their tails aren't broken. Still, I was only expecting them to turn out as regular high-yellows, so I was happy to see their cute little patterns. Makes it easier to tell them apart.

Those look great! I have a little baby that looks just like the one with the full body stripe. I love the one with the teardrop on its back. Forget circlebacks! Too bad it wont last My baby that looked like yours just shed for its second time yesterday and his black stripes have faded to a light light gray/grey (anyone know which spelling it REALLY is?) with the exception of about 7 or 8 little black dots. I love it! Ill try to get some pics up later this week. Keep up the good work. Have you named em yet?

I'm expecting them to turn out lavender like their mama!

And please do post some pictures of yours when you get the chance.

Thanks for your response!

One spelling is American, the other is for the rest of the world.
'Gray' is for the US, 'Grey'is for us Canadians. (just like colour/color, harbour/harbor, neighbour/neighbor, etc...)
