Jeff Hartwig, Sire/Dam to the little female black blood (Negrita)!

googo151 Nov 05, 2003 02:39 PM

These are some super Sumatran short-tails, from Jeff Hartwig. I don't know the origins of these guys, but they are some of the nicest black bloods out there and they produced a nice clutch for Jeff this year. I just received the sibling of the little female today and he is out-standing too in every respect of the word.
He even managed to lock on to my Pit-bulls nose this morning while looking him over. The dog got too close for comfort and "Tank", the latest acquisition, managed to grab a hold of Dylan's nose. Boy was that scary and funny all at once. Don't get me wrong, Dylan is my man, but he can be a little nosy some times, LOL! and I guess that the little fellow deemed it time to react, and man did he ever. Wish I had a picture of that, as Dylan is flailing away with this thing hanging from his nose. Phew! that was close, any how, alls well that ends well; they are both fine and none the worst. Hope you like the pics'.

The Sire is on the Left along with one of its progenitures, "Tank", recent arrival and the Dam is on the right of the photo.

Another nice one. You'll be the man in a few years to come when they produce some babies.Negrita, LOL, how did you think of that one, should name the male negro. My pit likes to get a little nosey also, and has taken some swipes, as well as my cat, so I make sure they aren't around now. Have fun with your new arrivals, lucky you. Later, Ethan

Hey Ethan,
Negrita is black or Mulata in spanish so thought that it would be cool or nice to call her that; being P.R., it is a common slang term we use in an endearing way for close friends or family of dark complexion. "Negrita", is the first post of the little female black blood (juvie). "Tank", is the little (sib) male to Negrita, that I just recieved today from Jeff, in the photo with the Sire in the Sire/Dam shot.

I initially named him "Negrito", but then thought that it would be cute and ironic to name him "Tank", since he is so small compared to the parents. But make no mistake, this little tike will grow up to be brawny in his own right (like father like son!); A little "Hurcules" if you will. LOL! - Hmmm, "Hercules", now why didn't I think of that sooner. LOL!!
Also received a nice adult pair of Black bloods with nice dark brown back ground and grey heads (Chrome) today.

Lets take a vote: Hercules or Tank for the little male?

Boriqua!...........How many mice do you feed them in a month? Jeff told me he doesn;t feed them heavily. "Gordo" will eat 2 mice every 8 days if I let him, but I'm not sure if I should do something like that. He eats large mice now.

Hey,
Boricua is right!! LOL! Are you a fellow Borinqueno? Any how, I stagger their feeding days with feeding taking place approximately 3 days apart. I don't like to bulk feed them all at once, but rather feed them with a 3 day interval and feed her again 7 days after the last feeding. I feed small mice of about 23grams, and find that they digest properly and are less prone to regurgitate if fed this way. Others will feed them 2 at one time, but I find that they are still small and I don't like gut loading them at too early an age. later - Angel

Angel,

Yea fellow Boriqua here

I've been doing something similar to the way you do. I feed him one mouse and then 4 days later I feed him another and then 6 days later I feed him again. Jeff told me he could eat alot more than what he was feeding him so I went and make a feeding schedule. I've only had him say a month and he has shed once and is getting bigger by the day! Pretty soon he will need new hides! I can't wait to get him feeding on nice sized rats.

Nice Lu,
Where are you located? I think that staggering the feeding regimen or schedule is a lot better than saturation feeding, until they are a little older. I don't find that their digestive system is slow, but they don't seem to defecate quite as frequently as one would like. They do have a propensity to retain stools for long periods, and some times soaking them is a must. This was her only bm, since I got her 9/18/03.
Is your little SST, a male or female? - Angel

Angel,

I'm located in NJ......"Gordo" is a male. Yea, I noticed that they don't poop much at all. What I do with "Gordo" is when his tail is fat, (thats usually poo) I give him a nice warm bath and he usually poops then. It works pretty good for me.

This little guy is getting big fast! I need to find me a female, (I will most likely be looking for 2 females in December and January).

Hey,
Very cool! I think that Kara at Nerd, is going to be breeding some of her girls this winter. So keeping my fingers crossed. All the best with little Gordo (fat boy!). LOL! Love it - Angel
