Dark scales only on newly shed area...

veronicag Nov 05, 2003 04:10 PM

I have not experienced this before and maybe it's nothing to worry about. But it never hurts to ask around if anyone else has experienced it or know why it happens...

Lizzy recently shed a 1 inch long section of his upper tail. Before that shed he hasn't shed in a long time - almost 9 months. He is one of my rescues that I've had for over a year now.

About 2 weeks ago he started shedding a part of his tail. When the old skin came off, it revealed a dark patch of scales underneath. Weird. The photo below doesn't really give justice to the degree of discoloration. The patch that is darker really stands out.

Also, Lizzy recently had a mouth culture done and the results came back with a Pseudomonas bacteria and Candida Yeast. He's been on Itraconazole for the Candida and Baytril for the bacterial. Any thoughts on the meds causing this discoloration? Actually, he was only on Baytril when he had the dark skin shed. Maybe it's the Candida yeast?

Thanks,

Veronica

But the scales appear healthy. Hopefully, it's nothing.
