temp. tank dividers

jbeetle Nov 05, 2003 09:05 PM

i am going to be splitting some ten gallon tanks up to hold small froglets and was wondering if it would be alright to use styrofoam to make the dividers? i would probably use that pink insulating foam, the ones sold in the giant sheets. i don't want to use glass, as it is only going to be used until these frogs become mature. then they will be paired up and moved to a lovely honeymoon tank to live happily everafter. let me know if you can think of any problems that would arise from using the styrofoam. thanks in advance.

how about giving acrylic/plexiglass sheets a try. which ever is cheaper i would try.
plus the acrylic would be thiner and take up less room.

jon, I have to agree with walt on the plexi-glass, try to avoid any materials that you aren't sure of. You never know what might leak out of that pink stuff.

The easiest thing to do would be buy some plastic shoeboxes and keep a few to each box, and this way you dont have to mess with plexiglass falling over or siliconeing it in place, and the shoeboxes are only a $1 each, but make sure they dont have gaps in the lid. If you have any questions in setting the boxes up just post them on here.

I have kept froglets in plastic shoeboxes before (and still do), but these are going to be a higher priced frog so I don't want to run the risk of an escape, and I am also going to be keeping each froglet by itself... so the shoeboxes would take up to much room. i just don't want to silicone glass or whatever as the frogs are only going to be kept in these tanks for a couple months. then i am will reuse the tanks for other frogs, so the dividers would be a pain to take apart if they were glued into place... but thanks for the idea anyways.

Hot glue might work. It should be strong enough to hold the divider in place and would be easy to peel off the glass when you wanted to remove the dividers.

Jonathan, my recommendation is the shoeboxes, knowing what frogs you are putting in them, I can tell you that that is what they have been kept in, and they, in my opinion, have a lower chance of escape from a shoebox, (never happens here), than from a ten gallon. Just my opinion. Plus, a stack of five shoeboxes takes up less room, or about the same, as one ten gallon....how many ways were you going to divide the ten gallon? Patrick

hey patrick. i was going to divide the one into three and then the other into two... but if you really think the shoeboxes is a better idea then i will look into that again. do you have a specific kind in mind? thanks

I use the rubbermaid shoeboxes but as long as the lid is tight fitting it will work, and I suggest using the saran wrap between the lid and the top of the box, I have never had escapes from this setup even when I house newly morphed vents in them (about a 1/4", anyways 5 shoeboxes stacked will take up less room than 2 ten gallons and they will be easier to clean than a 10 that is divided up into 3 sections. But be sure they are not the kind with latches, because there are often gaps where they are attached to the lid.

Jonathan, I have been using the Sterilite brand boxes with great luck. I must own two thousand of them! You have to be careful that the lids are closed, (I keep mine in rack systems that accomodate them without the lids)but in general I think that they are better than the ten gallons for a variety of reasons.
