My BP is staying on the cool side all the time

JLJ2018 Nov 05, 2003 09:09 PM

I've had my BP for about a month now (had lots of experience keeping snakes in the past though) and he's always been out and about in his cage ever since I've had him

For the past week or so all he does is stay in his hide on the cool side. When I take him out he's ice cold. When I put him back in I put him in the hide on the warm side, but I find him back on the cold side the next day.

Is he wanting to brumate or something? He's still eating so I didn't think that would be it. Just kind of has me freaked out. I've had probably 50 snakes and none of them have ever been this cold when I get them out. Thanks!

Hi there,

How big/old is your snake? If it is an adult, it sounds like it is seeking cool temps in preparation for breeding. Most of my adults are "laying cold." Females do this alot, are you sure he is a he?

If your snake is still a baby, then, who knows? Check your temperatures. Most of my babies do not lay cold...

I've only had him about a month...or she...not sure. He's about 14 inches long or so, and have no clue on age. The temp thing I'm not sure of since I have my digital thermometer in the new beardie cage. I had a cornsnake in this cage up until I got my BP and he never had any troubles thermoregulating. It's a 10 (or 15) gallon with a screen top. Undertank heater on one side, hides on both sides. I keep my house cold, around 66 degrees during the day, so I'm wondering if I don't need to add a basking light to create a warmer ambient temp.

Like I said, had tons of snakes and never had one this cold when I picked him up. Really weird.

Actually, I got to thinking...I found where he had defecated on the warm side when I cleaned his cage a while ago. Not sure how long it's been under there since I couldn't see it under the hide. He might have just been staying away from the poo.

My snake did that all last winter. Apparenlt the warm side was too arm, and the cool side too cool. I had the cage right near a window so he had very cold air coming in. He got respiritory infection, and needed shots.

Check your temps, and make sure your bp isn't getting too cool
