Feeding Help

kavanaugh_j Nov 05, 2003 09:37 PM

Hi, I am soon going to be the new owner of a leopard gecko and I was wondering about feeding. How often? How Much? And I was also wondering about where you guys keep your crickets...Do they stay in the house, and what about the loud singing they make? Is that preventable? I know these may be stupid questions but I am hoping someone can help. Thanks guys.

Alright,

Well, first off congradulations on your soon-to-be Leo! Second, I feed as much as my Leo's will accept within up to a 30 minute feeding period(depends on what your feeding and the Leo's age), every day. Some adults will only eat every other day and that's normal so don't worry. Crickets well.. they can't really shut-up when you want them too lol, but I find they are quieter in a colder setting because of some breeding issues. Uh what else.. I don't remember what else you asked so I may post a second note. See ya.

It's my understanding that only sexually mature (ie. adult) crickets make any noise. It's part of their mating process. So if you're getting a young leo, he'll only be eating young crickets for now (full grown ones are much too big for him) and you won't have to worry about that right now.

Mealworms are also an option. I just got my leo a little over 2 weeks ago, and have already switched her over to mealies from crickets. Mealworms are similar nutritionally (there are guides on the web. I know Grubco has one, google them) and they're cleaner, and easier to maintain. They also don't run and hide in your cage decorations (if fed in a bowl). You can easily train your leo to eat them out of a bowl (might take a little patience and work). There are a couple of threads posted on this page about good ideas for bowls (clear glass ashtrays and tealight holders).

Good luck

Make sure to gutload your prey on nutritious stuff.
