Springtail colonies

Arklier Nov 05, 2003 11:38 PM

I have a colony of springtails that I bought from Ed's Fly Meat. It consisits of a small Sterilite box, with pieces of charcoal and some yeast to sprinkle on top for food. My question is, is it possible to keep this colony going idefinitely like mealworms, or do you need to cycle them like fruit flies?

Keep the culture damp - I keep half an inch of water in the bottom of mine. Don't let it get too hot. Don't overfeed so that it sours. I prefer to use complex organic matter rather than yeast, e.g. pieces of apple core, banana peel, etc. Such coultres will keep going indefinitely - for years.
