What meds do you give a RTB with a respiratory infection?

veronicag Nov 06, 2003 12:16 AM

I just rescued a 7 year old Red Tail Boa, she's 7 feet long and has what I think is a respiratory infection. I can get the meds if I can figure out what to give her and how much. Does anyone know? I can take her to the vet also, but I thought I could try this route first.

Her symptoms are raspy breathing, opening her mouth sometimes to breathe, plugged nostrils, and mucus coming out of her mouth sometimes.

She's kept at about 85 - 95 degrees but her previous owners kept her at about 70 - 75 degrees.

Thanks for any info.

I would suggest that you take your boa to the vet (that is experienced with reptiles). I know that Amikasin works well in curing RI in boas, but I don't know how much to give your boa, since it is based on weight. Injections in the upper third of the body of amikasin should clear up the RI within a week or two.
Good luck,
Eric
