HELP!! Bearded sexing problem!!

cheyenness May 30, 2003 01:59 PM

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me?

I recently purchased (locally) two 18 month old dragons. They are beautiful with great coloring..... Anyway, these dragons have been together since they were hatchlings with no battles, lost limbs, etc. I put them into a larger habitat when I brought them home, they were being kept in a 20 long aquarium. Immediately following they started exhibiting breeding type behaviour. However, the one I thought to be female was fighting and her beard darkened just like the male did. After the brief "spat" everything goes back to normal and they co exist peacefully again. This has gone on for the last 3 days or so. I am starting to think that I actually have two males?!?! Is it possible that they have gotten along all this time together with them both being male???? I have tried sexing them and they both look the same. The only difference is that when they are not having a "spat" the one who I thought to be female has a orange and white beard, it only darkens to black when they fight, while the male always has a dark beard. They are both showing noticeable femoral and preanal pores ( I am NOT an expert). They both have a fat tail base and are approximately the same size. Shape and size of their heads is also very similar.

I am at a loss now, it seems I have 2 adult males and no adult females now!
I have compared them to my "Known pair" of Juv Hypo x Snows. I can sex the Hypo x Snows without a problem.

Since this post turned in to a book rather quickly, my question is this........

From what you have read, do you think these are both male? Have you ever heard of two males getting along like this before for over a year? And if so, why the attitude change now?

Thanks in advance,

Boy, they both SOUND like males. Maybe they're working out their new territory but are otherwise cool with each other. I don't think females have pores at all, but I do believe they can beard darken.
Just keep an eye out for signs of stress.

Thanks for the reply.
I am pretty sure they are both male. I have gone ahead and seperated them into different cages this evening... Just to be safe. They are still housed next to eachother, but atleast this way nobody will get hurt.

Ok, it became obvious once I seperated them!!!!

I now have 3 adult males and only ONE female.

I am going to be offering one of these two males up for sale or trade for a female I guess.
