Hi again, i was just wondering if anyone can tell me why I have this wierdo film on top of my turt's water. under the surface is clear just fine, but the whole surface is covered with this film. I bought a Zoo Med micro clean 316 filter it's for 10-30 gallon tanks, i have a 20 gal long. It's new, it's been set up fcor about a week. My turt only eats one food stick at a time, anything else is wasted, so i fish it out. so if any one can help me with this weird clear film that is on the water, that would be great.
thanks for all the help again, i'm a beginner!

I had the same problem when I used a MicroClean 304 (designed for a 5-15 G tank) in my 10 G tank. Within a couple of days of water change, there would be a film that looks like dust settling on the water surface. The main problem was that the filter was simply not strong enough! There wasn't enough water agitation.

After I bought that filter I read on lots of RES websites that turtles are messier than fishes; thus when buying a filter you want to aim for 3x the graded filtration power. i.e. For a 20 G tank, get a filter that's graded for a 60 G tank, and do not downsize the filter simply because the tank is only partially filled.

Now I have an Aquaclear 300 (100-300 GPH, graded for a 100 G tank) for my 20 G tank. The Aquaclear is a waterfall type filter and does a great job agitating water throughout the tank. I've never seen any film on my water surface after switching to this filter. Now I use my little MicroClean 304 only for water changes (i.e. using it as a pump).

Hope this helps!
