Coccidiosis

Twiglet Nov 06, 2003 05:39 AM

Ok so my little guy has not been well , seemed to not be eating much at all
Took him to my reptile vet . He gave him calcium & vitamin injections , tested his poo
and says he does have Coccidiosis ( vet said not to bad , but bad enough )
He gave me meds for this ( to inject in his tail ) once a day for two weeks .
Did it last night and he was a good little guy

Also the vet took blood and I should get the results on that today or tomorrow ( I'll post
my results ASAP )

Have to say I'm really gutted & so worried BUT he still seems ok and lively in himself .
I took out all his substrate and he is now on paper towels so i can clean out and disinfect
his tank EVERY DAY !!!!!

I wondered if anyone had dealt with Coccidiosis in uros and could let me know any info ?
With bearded dragons I know the drug dehydrates them , is this so with uros & with
dragons you can bath them lots , any info on what to do with uros ?

Thanks to everyone for reading this and any advice would be really appreciated

Sara xx

Got some of Marmites blood test results back ( only had quick word with vet as he was in the middle of something )

Says he needs antibiotics as he is fighting some infection not sure what yet , needs to wait
for the rest of the blood test results !! Said he also is anaemic but that could be due to the
fact he has not been eating

He said the rest of the results will tell us more about his liver/kidneys etc !!!!!

Not looking too good

Arthur had just gotten over a bout with coccidia just before I got Joe. I assume coccidiosis is the same thing, and not some other related, but different, deal.

The medication was different - Arthur got an oral paste medication every other day for two weeks, so I can't help you there. Maybe ask your vet if there's anything specific you should do to prevent dehydration.

The daily tank cleaning is evil, but absolutely necessary! I was very diligent about it and had no problems. Doug Dix recommended also wiping down the belly, vent area, and bottom of the tail before returning her to her cleaned tank, since they frequently walk through their own feces (especially in a bare tank). Use a VERY VERY VERY VERY dilute water/bleach solution. VERY. But it prevented Arthur from re-infecting herself.

Also, a week or two after the antibiotics, you can supply probiotics for your uro (acidophilus, etc.). The antibiotics kill off all the good flora in their bellies, so it needs to be replaced in order for good digestion.

Good luck!!

Torey , Thank you so much for your reply, info & advice ,

Well I'm still waiting on more results , should know today !!!
I'll ask the vet about dehydration , when he calls me later .

I am keeping him & his tank 100% clean !

I've got some probiotics to give him when he is ok ( ohh I hope he will be ok he is so precious )

Once again thanks for your support

( One good thing I HAVE seen him eat a few bits of greens so that MUST be a good sign )

Just spoke to the vet and my "Marmite's" blood test results are all back &
his liver and kidneys are fine

So it looks like he is poorly because of his cociddia and a bacterial infection ,
I've got meds for him ... I've to take another poo sample back after the meds and
he is to have another blood test in two weeks to see about the infection .
Hope he is gonna be ok

One good thing today I DID see him eat today

It's rough to have two things going on at once! All the extra stress...

The eating is a good sign, and it sounds like you're doing a great job taking care of Marmite, so I'm sure he'll be fine!

Arthur is fat and very sassy after her round.
