geckos and their hearing.... need some help

alieliza Nov 06, 2003 08:16 AM

I was wondering what their hearing is like. Can they hear at all? Is there hearing extra acute?
I keep a fat tail gecko (I know this is the leo site, but i know ill get an answer quicker here than i will on the other forum.) I live in the dorms of a college campus, and we semi-frequently have fire drills (or false alarms). I, up until the other day, bring ripple (my fat tail) outside with me when there is a drill for two reasons, 1. If it is a real fire i want him to be safe, and 2. The noise is SOOOOO loud. The other day i wasnt home when there was an alarm, and neither was my roommate, so he stayed in here for the 5-10 minutes that this blaring alarm was going off.
Should I be worried?
thanks for any replies

I can't comment on the exact sensitivity of their hearing, but they can hear. When I walk into my room, my little leo pops her head up and looks over to see who's home (before she can see me). Seems like she can hear pretty well. I think it depends on how comfortable your particular lizard is with loud noises. I don't know how much (if at all) the fire alarms bother it.

they can hear.....when i shake a brown paper bag full of crickets, all three of my geckos remember the sound, and they know food is about to be served.

One gecko will also know what I fill up the water bowl, as she will immediatly run to the waterbowl for fresh water.
