retic handling

drunk_on_chivas Nov 06, 2003 08:27 AM

i was wondering if its okay to handle my retic more than once a day. Will that be too stressful on the snake?
At the moment i take him out once a day..its still in the 'getting to know me' stages..so far so good..hasn't striked out at me yet.
But everytime i handle him..he's fine and calm for a while...then it'll start squirming and try to flee from me and i have keep pulling him back. He's quite fast and strong but i can still control him as he's still quite small(bout 4ft) but i was thinking that if this behavior persists it might be a problem when he grows to like 6ft or so.
Will he calm down as time goes by and accept his fate as being my pet?

I don't see the problem with holding your retic more then once or twice a day. I bring mine out anytime i want to. You have this curled up retic in a cage that once out wants to explore and becomes real active. Retics are very active snakes. My 10 1/2ft male can be a handful (literly!). My 6ft female is very active and is still learning to trust me. Very flinchy snake but has never tried to bite (unless in her cage-very strong feeding response as most retics have) When pulled out of their cage retics don't just sit still as they are a very active snake. Don't expect your retic to sit like a ball python! In real large adults 14ft plus, I find them to be more laid back then the smaller ones. Anyways this is what my experience has been like.
