Temps for Sulcata. Help, Please!!!

MonkeyLove Nov 06, 2003 09:06 AM

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I have a 4 year old male Sulcata, Howie, that we bought from a friend. We built a pen in our back yard that he's been living in until recently. We live in Virginia and it's starting to get cold so Howie's been living in our reptile room.

We're in the process of cooling our herp room for the season and I've been keeping the temps in the room in the mid to upper 60's...I just bought a Ranco ETC and wired it to the AC unit in the herp room so I could keep the temp exactly at 65 to sufficiently cool our beardies. This room temp also keep my snakes (boas and balls) at 72 in the evening.

Howie has a basking light where the temp is 95 during the day. We don't have a heat mat to keep him warm at night. Should we get a heat mat so he can stay warm at night, or should we find a way to close off part of the room so we can keep the ambient temp higher there. Thanks in advance.

A heat mat should work just fine as a temporary fix or just for the winter.
I'd suggest insulating the bottom of the matt and be careful not to cover the top. The Kane heat matts seem to be the safest and I've found them on line at a decent price at LLL reptiles.
