Shed or not?

rainboa Nov 06, 2003 11:12 AM

My female BRB clouded up like she was going to shed, but after I raised the humidity to where it should be (by getting rid of the pine shavings and changing to coconut fiber) the haze is almost completely gone. Is this normal? I have never seem anything like that, and there is no trace of a shed ever happening. Is this something I need to worry about?

Also, I have not fed her for about 8-9 days waiting for the shed, should I offer food?

Thanks for the help,

Matt

If she refuses no big deal. She is probably still going into shed though. The higher humidity may have caused it to be less noticable. I can tell that mine darken up nearly two weeks before they shed. Check her belly. If it looks pink then this is a sign that she is starting her shed cycle. The worst tha tcoudl happen is that she woudl refuse to eat.

Matt,
. I would soak her in luke warm water for 30 minutes to see if that helps her to shed. It may be that everything is fine and she is just not ready to shed yet. Soaking them will often get a stuck shed to come loose and also gets them rehydrated in case there is something wrong. IMO pine shavings are not suitable substrate for any snakes.

Re: pine shavings.

Thanks for the advise, and as I have stated many times, the pine shavings are not more! I have chnged to a more suitable substrate, coconut fiber. The humidity is now up around 60-70% and they are both (male and female) very happy.

Back to the shed though. She soaks quite frequently in her water bowl, although less frequently now that i have added a hiding box for them. And the cloudy color is almost non-exsistent. She would not feed last night, so i am assuming that she is getting ready to shed, but is just not ready yet.

I'll keep you posted,

Matt

My experience has been that they will eat if their eyes are clear after their skin clears and pre-shed when they have pooped their last meal. Does that make sense? It did to me I suppose.
