Help to identify NC snakes

spudsmom35 Nov 06, 2003 11:22 AM

I don't normally come to this forum as I only keep a few corns,a burm and a boa but having the local reputation as being the animal lady that does rescues I have recieved several small snakes that need relocation. It is probably my own fault since I try to convince people not to kill the snakes they find, the latest being found in a church. My concern is how to identify the venomous hatchling cooperhead and cottonmouth which are the only hot snakes found in my area. Adults are easy to ID and I have been going by the ID of the the yellow or green tails on young but I sure would hate to make a mistake. I don't handle the snakes any more than necessary to contain them until I have time to relocate them and have been unable to find a good description and photos of hatchlings on the net especially for the cottonmouth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Extraordinary juvenile cotton mouth- Agkistrodon piscivorus

A juvy copper head looks just like an adult, but smaller.
