what do you breed rats in?

rudedogsurfrat Nov 06, 2003 11:49 AM

I tried putting 1.2 in a mouse box but they kill each other when the female is gravid. Where do you get a good rat setup or how can you make one for real cheap?

Any large rubbermaid or feeding trough with do.

Are you sure you don't have two males in with that female? Males will fight for the right to breed your female rat. Female rats should get along before either is bred with the male, to ensure peace. Also, mammals don't get gravid, they get pregnant. Only egg laying creatures become gravid.

I'm positive that the rats are 1.2. (Were)
So what kind of top can you put on these containers?

Also in response to your comment of gravid vs. pregnant comment.
Gravid means pregnant in latin. Also it is a well used medical term in labor and delivery... ... of humans.

An example: You can see this in any Labor and Delivery Suite of ANY hospital in America.Just look at the board behind the nurses station. If a woman has been pregnant 3 times and has only given birth one time she is considered a Gravida 3 Para 1.
If she has been pregnant 4 times and has given birth 4 times then she is a GRAVIDA 4 para 4.
So the word GRAVIDA is talking about humans not reptiles in the hospital.

I just use the top that came with the rubbermaid container. I cut a large opening and use the hardware cloth to cover it. So far I haven't had any problems with rats or mice chewing through the containers. I had mice for over 6 months now and rats about a month. I think rats or mice may chew their way out due to boredom, especially rats. Thus it is always good to spend a little extra money to provide them things to play with.

As for Gravid...from my personal experience, gravid is commonly used to refer to pregnant reptiles and pregnant is referred to mammals or live bearing animals. I have no clue what hospitals use but none that I have ever been in use Gravid for pregnant humans. Perhaps you have it there is due to living closer to Latin American. I live in Canada, and other than French, English is the dominant language.

The fact Gravid is latin for pregnant doesn't surprise me. Most of English consist of words from another language or derived from another language. English is the 'mutt' of languages.

I made my last set of tubs out of mortar mixing tubs ($4)with 1/2" hardware cloth tops ($1 or so for the hardware cloth and $1 for the 1" X 2". I also put feed hoppers in mine. Don't do this if you want to use them in a rack system. They won't slide out. I have only been keeping 2 or 3 tubs, so I just stack them on top of each other.

Here's a pic of the corner of an old top to go by. I don't use sterlite tubs anymore because of chewing problems. I don't wrap the hardware cloth around the edges either, lost too much blood.

DeMak Nov 06, 2003 10:46 PM

I don't use the plastic tops anymore, also because of chewing.
