Update: Second egg......crested was deceased.

Gecko2525 May 30, 2003 02:35 PM

Just thought I would let you know that I decided to open the second egg. It was beginning to turn yellow and had a lot of brown spots.

I open very carefully. They really are JAM PACKED in there. There was a full size crested in there. Same colour as the hatched one. This one's eyes had a cloudy colour over them so I'm assuming he had been dead for awhile. He still had his mouth in the food sac.

When I had him fully out. My sister noticed that one of his front legs was smaller than the other too. Which it was.

Any ideas on what happpened? Was it something I did maybe or just a nature?

****The same female laid again last night. Two perfect eggs. Hope I won't have problems with these two. It seems like such a waste of life. So I have 3 warm in the incubator now.****

Thanks

I have had the same experience. I believe it is just natures way. Survival of the strongest. Even if the gecko would have made it out of the egg, it probably would have not lived long.
Good luck with your new eggs

Could have been a number of things Liz. Anything from incubation conditions (temp, humdidty, etc), not enough food/vitamins, tired adults, etc. It could have just been a rare instance of mutation, but that’s a very low probability. See what happens with the next batch to be sure. If it happens again then you will have to review your methods and pinpoint a possible cause. Best of luck and if you need any help you know where to find me =)
