Issue with crickets

bigdee Nov 06, 2003 02:14 PM

I have some crickets that are just hatching out, the substrate is now dry. Do I leave it dry or will the other eggs dry out. I tried to pour a litte water but i dont want to drown them.

Cricket eggs need to be kept humid, but you don't want them wet. I mist sand, or wads of tissues (the crickets love to lay on them and then I can easily move the eggs if I so desire sincy I dont' breed huge numbers.) Just make sure there's moisture in the air so the eggs don't dry out. Physically wetting them, our pouring water over them may drowned the eggs. I've also had unexpected success with cricket breeding when a female got into a planted enclosure and apparently laid her eggs in the moist soil and in a few weeks I notive baby crickets everywhere...
The best way to breed them is to get a tall plastic garbage can they can't hop out of, and fill the bottom with sand, then offer food and water and mist it to keep the sand damp. When the sand gets nasty, you can mix it or replace it, and being able to keep them in an open container like that keeps it fresher.
