Temps and digital thermometers

Melle Nov 06, 2003 02:55 PM

Hello,

I've had my beardie for a little over a year now. I used to use one of those little round pet store thermometers, and i would put that directly underneath his basking spot, and it would get up 100-105 with a 75 watt bulb (i used to keep it at 110-115 with a higher watt bulb, but he didnt seem to like it that hot, he would always gape and was usually on the other side of the tank, and didnt eat as well. i know the range should be 105-115.) Once i took the temps down (accourding to the little round thermometer), he ate so much better, likes to bask, and is digesting his food fine and pooping and everything a normal dragon should, and has been fine for a long time.

well, i went out and bought one of those digital thermometers, it has a metal probe and you just push the button and it shows up in the little screen, for taking the temps of people's fevers and stuff, because i read digitals are more accurate and the little round ones werent reliable at all. so i took the temps of my beardie's basking spot, and the thermometer only reads 98. But he is doing fine, in fact the past few days he hasnt been basking at all (i think hes sorta going into some sort of brumation).

My questions are, do some beardies just like their temps a little lower? maybe i bought the wrong kind of thermometer or was doing something wrong? should i get a higher watt bulb again anyways, even though he seems to do better on the cooler temps? Thanks for any replies!

I prefer to keep my temps around 100 - 105, but I have read that temps in the high 90's are fine for adults. IMO, if he's comfortable at that temp, eating good, and basking, then I would leave it alone.

I think we are finding out that the 90-100 temps are preferable to beardies.
