stinky poop revisited...

lele Nov 06, 2003 03:01 PM

...someone recently asked about how to control stinky poop smell. Most of us claimed "my cham's poop doesn't smell!" - myself included.

Well, in defense of the original poster I have to say, yes, Luna's poop does smell. Most of us deal with it once it has dried and there is no discernible smell but she dropped a whopper on a thick chunk of branch today and since I am switching cages I began to wash it off while it was still wet - ICK!

So as much as all of would like to claim that our (cham's) ^@*! doesn't stink we need to humble ourselves and smell it for what it is...

In response to that original poster I would say - just stay away from it until it is dry!

LOL! Try the first morning bomb from a 25", 1.4 lb melleri who loves cockroaches. It's one reason I try to get her outdoors for the morning warmup! Predator poop is just nasty. I am always glad I don't keep monitors or large constrictors. They are worse by far especially as they often like to go in their waterbowls.

"Stinky poop" In chameleon dropping can be an indication of high flagellatees or parasites. ALL chameleon has some level of these parasite but if they eat a cricket or insect that has a parasite, they too can develope higher levels that require treatment.
I try to get fecal floats done on everyone at least once every three or four months to monitor this, but stinky poop over here almost ALWAYS has meant high flagellatees or parasites and mild antibiotics have been given to get them to normal levels!

probably not a bad idea to get a fecal done regularly if feeding potential carriers. I think Luna's poop is only stinky b/c i pick it up sometimes right after she poops. i am now waiting until it dries! Once i switch to my own bred roaches and silkies I will not have the parasite issue, but in the meantime...
