Dead Tortoise Hatchling - ID Unknown

jobst Nov 06, 2003 03:28 PM

Who wants to have a go at this one? A friend of mine has a dead hatchling in formaldehyde (Origin unknown - it's in Europe).. He does not know what species it is and would very much like to find out. It measures roughly 1.2 x 1.4 inches.
It looks to me to be a tortoise of some sort, I'm thinking either sulcata (but perhaps too small) or graeca... Anyone??

Thanks!
Job,
The Netherlands.

Come on, there appear to be people on this forum that could at least do some educated guess...
Please?

Thanks,
Job.

It looks like a Sulcata to me... (maybe a little small though?)

i don't know if it's too late and you found out,but the tortoise pic you placed definitely looks to be a spur-thigh(Geochelone sulcata)from the picture the most obvious way for me to tell is by pattern...

Thanks for your reply!
Is it not too small to be sulcata, though? I know that hatchling size can depend on many factors such as developmental state and egg size, but this one seems really small still to be sulcata, I'd say...

Thanks again,
Job.

your absolutely right,it looks exactly like a geochelone sulcata but size isn't,it's a tough one and i agree withy uo on your first guesses too,it has similar characteristics as a dwarf greek(graeca ibera) and has some similar patterns as a egyptian (Testudo kleinmanni )also...sorry i couldn't be of any help, good luck on finding out...

Looks more like a Kinyxis to me, probably a ssp of belliana or perhaps spekii.

Best,
Paul
