Bloated Fire Belly

hubbibi13 Nov 06, 2003 04:06 PM

Hi guys I'm new to the message board so I hope noone has posted this already.
I've got a problem with one of my fire belly toads. I just noticed this morning he is very bloated. The other 2 look okay but he is very round. He moves around okay, when I tried to pick him up he was able to hop away fine, but I'm worried about him. I'm very new to owning frogs and I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. This is their habitat:
They are in a 20 gallon tall aquarium with openings on the sides and the top. (it's a cage made for reptiles) They have a moss like bedding that I mist daily to keep the humdity level up. They also have a big bowl in the middle of the tank I keep filled with water. They have a basking light that comes on for 8 hours a day.
That's all I can really think of. Oh there is also an american toad in with them. The toad I rescued from a lady who was tired of it and was going to let it go outside, even though she bought it at a pet store. They all seem to get along okay and they've been housed like this for over 3 months now with no problems.
If anyone has an suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

It may be getting ready to shed its skin. I've noticed that is what my American Toads do for a few days before they shed.

Well that makes me feel better My hubby asked a guy at my work (I work at a petstore) he owns a lot of reptiles and said it was nothing to worry about.
Hopefully he will be okay.

The American needs to be seperated from the Firebellys. All toads have different toxins and need to be with their own kind. For now, I'd even seperate the one bloated one until hopefully you see some improvement. What kind of substrate are you using? Could the boated one have swallowed something while going after some of his food? Small gravel sometimes causes impaction. These are just some ideas I'm tossing out at you; hope he gets well soon.

hey-
it's probably nothing, assuming these are adult toads. it might even be that that particular toad is an egg-laden female. some females can look kind of bloated. however, i agree with that other fellow- take out the american toad. bombina are toxic, and will definitely irritate this guy, and possiby kill him.
