Difference between male and female

gottaturtle Nov 06, 2003 05:10 PM

Hi. My turtle is 2 years old now, and is doing fine. It is a female, but I was wondering how to tell whether its a boy or girl. According to what I know, its a girl, but I would just like to know what to look at in order to tell.

I look at the turtle from the side and pull out the tail. The Cloaca (anal opening)on Females is closer to the body than a males. Meaning the opening should be inside the edge of the carapace (top shell). A males opening will be beyond the edge of the carapace. (Farther away from the body.) Mature males may have longer front claws than a female too. I've seen large males with front claws at least a half inch or more long. Hope that helps.
