Thermometer Question

kavanaugh_j Nov 06, 2003 05:41 PM

I know very little about caring for the leo as you guys can tell so I'm getting all my questions out now, before i get the leo...This one is about the thermometer you guys use. What type of thermometer is it and where do you guys place it at to measure the temp...is it in the tank or above? Thanks again for your help.

You should be able to find a digital thermometer at your local store for under $20. You want one that has a ‘probe’ (long wire with a temperature sensing device on the end). You place the probe on the bottom of the cage, above the Under Tank Heater. You are aiming for 90 degrees of belly heat, this normally requires a UTH that has, or is plugged into a rheostat (dimmer). It’s really ideal to have everything setup and calibrated before you consider buying your gecko, waiting is always the hardest part. Let us know if you have any more questions or concerns.

Take a look at kalidraven’s cage a few posts down; it has a very good picture of a digital thermometer and the probe. It’s important to note that the picture is not of a leo setup, its for a uromastyx. But it does illustrate the thermometer and probe placement. Please remember sand is not a good substrate for leos!
