Tree Fern background?

Monkeyman Nov 06, 2003 08:03 PM

I want to use this for my background. But I keep hearing about how expensive the stuff is, so I decided to check the cost at a couple diffent places and compare. Now, $1 per 6"x6" square seems pretty reasonably to me, when you compare it to $4 for the same amount at most other places. So other than finding it cheap(or at all), what other problem(s) are there with Tree Fern Panels? Does it rot? Can it hold water? Etc, etc...

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. Any info about those TreeFern Tikiheads will also be greatly appreciated.

i heard that tree fern panals are sorta illegal? not sure though

rc_racer_007 Nov 06, 2003 08:27 PM

I do not think tree fern is illegal, but you it does take trees to make this product. I have it, im not sure what you mean by holding water, like a water fall?

Im starting to show signs of moss growing on mine. Its easy to attach. It can be a little pricy, allthough personally i think it looks better then cork but every one has their opinion. i know blackjungle has it, but its quit pricey. Have you checked out T&C? They have it in two sizes for quit a bit less. www.fantasticfrogs.com

Where did you see tree fern panels for 1$ a 6'x6' square? If you did, you discovered a fantastic price.

Thank you so much, this will save me a lot of money. Kyle, who did the link page, should put this on his page. Thank you again!

Holy moly, those are great prices! A lot of frog sites sell those 8" x 24" panels for $20 each and only have one size. I ordered one, and after it was ordered had to change the size of tank, so I didn't have enough. Now I can buy some smaller pieces to fill in the gaps.

Yea...I'm kind of a tree fern freak!!! I love the stuff! I use it for backgrounds as well as substrates. Stacked upon each other, they create a great substrate for epiphytes that you don't necessarily want to mount on the back wall. It limits your options for terrestrial plants but...so. Bromeliads are the most beutiful plants for a vivarium to me and using tf panels makes re-arranging the tank much easier. It also makes for a cleaner tank when considering substrate making it's way under your false bottom. I've mostly used it as a single panel substrate so I have maximum vertical space for plants instead of wasting vertical space in creating a landscape that slopes upward toward the back, I just keep the water just below it.
GREAT FIND!!!
