A couple questions for Robyn on the decomposed granite....

tgreb Nov 07, 2003 08:36 AM

Did the different grades of d.g. have a different consistentcy or is it mostly a color difference? I am in MI and no one has it. A couple places thought they might be able to get it but I hate to order 10 tons(minimum order) and have it be the wrong stuff. Any suggestions? One place had some but it was really course and looked like it would not work too well. Yours looks like it has a high soil(lack of a better term) content. I am keeping island chuckwallas and need a good burrowing medium since they are more burrowers that the mainland chucks. I have also read an article that the Indy Zoo published that said they had problems with decomposed granite in their desert building with lizards rubbing themselves raw. Maybe that was because of the grade or consistancy they were using though. They had it delivered from the Tucson area. The stuff you have looks ideal but the supply yards here never heard of it(figures). I have tried many different soils available here but end up just removing it because I am not happy with it. Anyway the info on your sight is excellent and I appreciate that you guys make it available. Thanks, Tom Greb

there are perhaps 6 grades of the dg at our local spot, and the one we use is the finest one they have. more sandy, less rocky (but still quite a few small rocks). there are probably even more grades than that available somewhere : )

even the next grade up, when we tried that, was really terrific when it was very moist, but like concrete when it dried out.

try goofing around with the topsoil/sand/vermeculite mix that is on our FAQ, we used that very successfully for a couple of years with our Ackies for laying and burrowing.

also, potting soil is not topsoil. topsoil is generally "cleaner" with less additives and other mysteries. it may work fine, but look for topsoil first.

and don't forget to dig around locally and see what is available in the woods, the forest, the streambed, for free : )

you used sounds ideal as that is pretty much what the soil is like on San Esteban and the Angel chain. I will have to look into it some more. Thanks again Tom

None of the people I called had ever heard Of "Decomposed Granite". The only person who had ANY clue what I was talking about said that it MIGHT be some kind of Stone dust. And the Only Stone Dust they have in this area (NY) would be Lyme stone. Would that Be harmful to them Uros since it's lyme stone? My first thought said it would be but I wanted to double check. So what do you think???

Humm bad choice for uros, they are tiny rock particles...definatly pass. I use it as a base for my ring footing, for horses. It makes a HARD pack when mixed with water, plus the pieces stick together. If a uro ate this it would be extremely harmful i would think worse than crushed walnut, that has a similar shape with the same rough edges...
Good luck finding the substrate you want.

when we did lime our stalls it was like little tiny sharp kinda crystals...we dont lime anymore since we have a new system of french drains but i used to do it to my pony's stall all the time when i was younger...Now with a large barn that we run the french drains keep everything down to no odor basically, and no need to lime. But yes i think it BASICALLY is stonedust is crazy to put any animal to live on however...

I have One 21 year old Morgan/Quarter Horse cross Blood bay Gelding. His name is Dallas. And My Other Is a 9 year old T-Bred Mare, Dapple/Flea Bitten Grey. Her Name is Dove and She's in foal to a friesian. I compete in Gymkhanas but I haven't this year. SHe's in foal and He's retired. Plus been busy with My job and all. Maybe late next year after the foal is here. The Foal is due between the dates of April 15th and May 30th. We're, obviously, Beyond excited. The baby will be My Gymkhana horse. I'll lose but I'll look great doing it! LMBO!! hahaha I'm not a serious about competeing. I do it for hahas. But I do know what you're talking about with the A Circut and all. Heard of it. Just not my thing. I prefer My Big ol' Western saddle. LOL (In reality My saddle weighs only about 20 lbs. Lighter saddle is better for barrel racing)
