WTF eating habits?

croakys Nov 07, 2003 11:17 AM

I have two whites tree frogs (approx 2 1/2 to 3 inches long). One stopped eating for a day or two, wasn't moving around much. It had "pinpoint" pupils for a day while the others were full dilated (black). Then on the third day it was back to normal eating well looking filled out and active. (It has been ok for a week past the incident) The other did not behave this way. I also noticed a large frog "dropping" the same day the frog came around.
Is this normal behavior?
Could it have had some kind of blockage?
Could it be some kind of reaction to accidental injestion of the plants?
To help with the response here are some tank specs:
75 gal planted vivarium/paladarium. approx 60% land area, with climbing branches, water feature. water is filtered by a canister filter with activated charcoal/filter floss water approx 6 inches deep.
50% weekly water changes are made with treated water.
there are bottom feeder type fish in the water area(may be removed when/if a WTF breeding colony is established)
air temp 80-82F day time 76-78F night
water temp 80-82F days, 80F nights
humidity 50-55% days up to 65% nights
water chem :
Nitrite 0ppm, Ph 6.8-7.2, chlorine 0ppm, hardnes 120 (medium)
cooling fan in hood directed towards tank for air circ
4 40 watt flourecents cycled (12 hours on)
1 red light nocturnal incandesent
Live moss over bed-a-beast/peatmoss/spagnummoss substrate
more tank info can be seen here:

the tank described is posted oct 16.(the toad described in the viv/post has been moved to a separate tank, thanks to all the mixing species posts in this forum)

I have never heard of anything like that. You may want to take the frog to a vet if nobody else has a good Idea of what is wrong.

Actually on second thought one of my Whites has stayed hidden and not come out at night for a few days before. I also have found a large poop after she has become active again. It is the pupil thing that is odd sounding to me.

Odd to me too. I am really wondering if it is not some reaction to some toxin in the tank.
The only plant that I have that might be suspect is polynesian Ivy (pellonia pulcra) all the others are on many "safe" plant lists . The ivy was not on the toxic lists or the safe lists

I would most likely think that it is the plant that did this to the frog. Plants, as in any animal, take a long time to pass through their system and may cause some momentary blocking if the frog is not usually eating plants. The frog should be fine unless the toxins are bad in the plant - just remember to always research the plant before you put it in. Good luck!

Frogs skin are really thin. They are also pretty heavy. If one of them jumped on a plant it could break it. This can cause the plant to seep any secretion into the substrate. If the frog constantly sleeps in the same place were the plant secrations are than they can become poison.

I would have never thought of that!!
The frog in question always "bedded down" under a pitcher plant
it layed on/around its large leaves. The plant was reccomended for vivariums. But I will check for breaks in the leaves.I also found some mushrooms growing in the tank under some creeping fig plants(spores got in somehow) I have removed them.
p.s. the frog has been doing great eating and no more strange occurances
