Getting a New snake. what kind should i get?

spazoidus Nov 07, 2003 11:39 AM

I'm looking to get into Boa's and Pythons. I've had snakes before, so i'm not a beginner. I don't want a totally common one like a royal, or a red-tail. I also don't want something the size of a burmese, but i do want something that's large in girth.

I like Tree Boas and Pythons, Borneos, rainbows, dumeril's, Sumatrans, Salaysians, and some blood pythons. Basically things with alot of color. I just really want to know if any of these make good pets or if they are all bad tempered. any info would be great.

Thanks.

I might have gotten lucky but I got a Dumerils Boa at a show in McDonough, Georgia back in April and he's easily the best temperament of my 5 snakes. Never fusses when I get him out. Hasn't refused a single frozen/thawed rat yet. Sheds beautifully. Spends a lot of time out of his hide nestled down in the substrate. Just a great snake!!

captive born Blood Pythons from Sumatra are dog tame and very colorful. I suggest you read VPI's web site about blood pythons and their captive care. (www.vpi.com)

I had a red sumatran blood python for about 10 years before I got rid of it. It was a great snake, and a very impressive specimen!
