Plants

alreynolds2003 Nov 07, 2003 11:57 AM

I was wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions. Right now I have cage made out of wood and then a 1/4 in. screening nailed to the wood on all surfaces including the bottom so that the water, whereever it is dripping(i move it around) drips right into the drip pan that covers the entire buttom as well (2 inches deep made out of titanium) my cage is 34x37x48. The reason I need a new plant is because one of them is absolutely monsterous and it weighs a ton. So much that it is making the bottom of the cage sag in so that I can't pull out the pan and the screen is stapled to the wood, which is supporting it but it sags in the middle and makes the plant off balance. I need a plant that is sturdy that my guy can climb on that is 3-3.5 ft tall that I can maintain at that height. Thanks in advance.

If you put in some crossbars as support on the bottom frame, this should support most any sized plant. Since you nailed the screen on the outside of the frame - you can cut wood strips to sit inside the frame on the bottom. We would recommend 2x2 wood.

Hope this makes sense.

there is a problem in doing that, although it would have been a good idea had we though about it upon constructing it. To do so would require tearing off the screen so that we could put the 2x2 boards in. to do that we would have to take off the metal stripping that covers the wood along the edges so that if water hit there it is angled such that it drips into the pan. After tearing that off we need to take off the screen. Is there an easier way that you can think of? Maybe just getting a lighter plant. my last one was probably about 35 lbs including the mud add pot. even if it was just 15 lbs lighter would be okay.

If you could take a picture of the inside of the bottom (of the cage), maybe we could figure it out.

It sounds like the screen is on the inside of the frame?

The bottom of the cage is screen.... nothing on top of it for a substrate so that when the water drips it drips right into the receptacle which covers the entire bottom. The screen is above the receptacle so that I may pull out the thing whenever i need to, to clean it. The problem is that the plants are on the screen and the screen - which is strong enough to hold it - sags when the heavier plant is on it. This makes the bottom an uneven surace.

I understand that the bottom is screen - we have over 100 cages with screen bottoms too. But since we attach the screen to the outside of the wood, we can insert wood crossbars to support the plants.

Maybe you can attach the wood below the bottom screen?
A picture of the cage is best..... it will clear up any explanations.
