What is a good turtle for a beginner?

djair Nov 07, 2003 12:04 PM

I have a 10 gallon tank with a basking area, basking lamp, 18" reptisun 5 uvb lamp and a small fluval filter. The tank can be heated. I'm looking for something that won't grow too large too fast.

You may want to consider a stinkpot or a texas map. Go to Austin's turtle page for more information.

I would recomend a musk (stinkpot). These are great turtles that are very interesing and one of the most under rated. They won't get very big and are reasonably easy to care for. Some say they do not need UV lighting either but I feel it is essential for good health. So it is good you have uv lighting. I would also include a uva incandesent light for a better heat source.
