baby sized pack burrowing/not interested in eating.

pygmyleaf Nov 07, 2003 12:09 PM

Hes been getting very dry lately, and hes substrate keeps soaking up all of the water in his water dish. Hes been burrowing to were you can only see one eye and he doesnt hop after food or do anything to it, he just stays under the substrate. It might be time to clean his cage, so I think I will do that when i get home today. He seems to dry up and get puffed up lately and im always having to pour water on him and spray him more often thatn usual. perhaps he needs a clean cage.

Horned frogs are ambush preditors. Most of their time is spent hiding in the substrate waiting for food to walk by. Their substrate does not always have to stay moist and its actually beneficial to have a moisture gradient in the substrate itself where one side stays nice and moist and the other side is dryer. As for the water dish, you might want to consider buying a new one. Those clay bowls that sit under plant pots are what I use but they do allow water to seep out slowely into the substrate. If this is a problem a plastic one should help you avoid that problem. Refusing to eat is a common problem with horned frogs. A healthy frog can go months without eating but it can be anoying to keep offering food when the frog seems to not even notice it. Try other food items than what you are feeding and double check that the temperature isn't falling too low. Good luck,
